Alcohol obsession and tea treats

Last night, I went out with a good friend and after having some wine at dinner, we decided to grab a bottle on the way home to share some with her roommates. When we started looking in the budget range (under $10 is our standard), I realized that we were drawn to somewhat different choices. It got me thinking that I should start to loop back and not only consider how much alcohol we need but also consider what brands we plan on serving and offering a selection of great budget wines for everyone. I posted two surveys (one on the local board, one on a  national one) to see what it is that people actually like to drink. I'll post back in a day or two with the collection of response I've received on brand favorites-- maybe this will inspire a great wine tasting event with friends!

I have found so far that there have been few responses on sake preferences.  *sigh*  There is a place to go sake tasting in Oakland, so we may have to try that.  We are hoping to also incorporate a Japanese sake ceremony into our wedding ceremony, where we do something that is either the san san kudo ceremony or inspired by it (maybe a fusion of that and a western wine ceremony).  We plan to have each bridesmaid serve sake to a set of parents after we shared the cup or cups.  We have already bought those, from a restaurant vendor in the Inner Richmond neighborhood of San Francisco called Kamei (one of my faaaaaavorite places to go).  The parents' sets are all various natural stone-looking sets.  We still need a san san kudo set or whatever we will use to drink from.

This is what a san san kudo set looks like, but I recently saw a very nice set in one of the stores in Japantown.  I'll have to go back and look again!

In the meantime, last night I talked to one of the catering vendors we're considering, and was trying to get an applies-to-apples quote without the linens and rentals.  I felt some resistance.  Unfortunately, we're on a tight budget in a pricey market, and we're trying to save wherever possible.  I'm thinking linen and table service rentals may be one of them.  I do like this vendor though because she's totally supported my idea of using the Numi blooming tea in beautiful glass teapots on the tables:
