Something fishy...

...we have made progress on our catering woes!
The big problem being that we had a small budget and a specialty request in an expensive market. We were looking for Japanese entrees with limited sushi (mostly rolls) for an appetizer, but we've found out that that is unworkable (or we'd have to pay about $3,000 more than we budgeted). After consulting with family members, searching far and wide, and facing reality, we've ended up going a different route.. we will provide mostly sushi (enough for a light meal):

We found an inexpensive but decent sushi catering company nearby the church, Sushi Hana (http://www.sushihanasf.com/) Although it's not extremely fancy (sushi options in the city cover a huuuge range), we'll have two sushi chefs making a nice presentation out of it, with the fish case and everything for people to watch.

People will have small orders of nigiri, plus a variety of rolls (some are vegetarian) and then a mix of appetizers (beef skewers, seaweed salad, edamame, asparagus rolls, and a few others). And although we are making this more of a "small plates" option rather than a more formal meal, we're going to serve more alcohol... a couple of red wines, white wines, and two types of sake.

We are also investigating an espresso bar/fruit smoothie/coffee/tea bar for non-alcoholic beverage options. There is a special tea catering service, a few espresso catering services or a slushie machine rental place. Still many decisions to be made on this!
Finally, we have firmly decided on the cream puff tower for the "cake" using cream puffs from Beard Papa (www.beardpapsf.com)...

although we may have other sweets and snacks on the side (mochi, Pocky, salty snack mix, gummy candies). We're still thinking about that... Hopefully, it will be quite a presentation and the entertainment factor will distract people from the smaller portion size (everyone's dieting these days anyway!) Plus, more alcohol should mean happy people. :)
