My soon-to-be fiance, Josh, and I were closing on our first home on March 30, 2009. After the closing, we went back to the house to unload some things and celebrate being homeowners with a bottle of champagne we had bought that morning. After unloading the U-Haul, I wanted to skip the celebrating and get ready to go out, as we had plans to meet some friends for dinner and the closing had taken longer than it was supposed to. Josh told me no and that we should go sit on the back deck and drink the champagne. I argued with him, but finally I agreed to celebrate quickly.
We popped open the champagne bottle, and Josh started talking about how buying this house was putting all his eggs in one basket. I responded, "Well, it's a really pretty basket! And you know that it's the best investment." Josh said, "I think it's time to put all my eggs in another basket as well." He pulled out a ring box and got down on one knee, proceeding to tell me that he loves me and wants to spend the rest of his life with me. I just started crying and couldn't even focus on what he was saying! I did manage to say yes, and he handed me the ring box -- to which I said, "No, you have to put it on my finger!" It was the most incredible day imaginable! What a way to begin our life together.
