Sean and I had been dating for almost five years when we decided to purchase a house together in Kitchener. We had certainly talked about marriage and knew that was what we wanted, but also knew that a house was our first priority. We started looking and eventually (after seeing fourteen houses) found the perfect house for us. We took possession of the house on June 26, 2009. When we first got the keys we decided to go over just the two of us to see how things looked and to bring a couple carloads of stuff over. When we got there in the late afternoon, we toured the house and were just about to leave when Sean indicated that there was one other box of stuff for the kitchen that his uncle had given to us. His uncle had just combined households with his girlfriend, so had given us a lot of duplicates.
It was a medium-sized cardboard box, and me, being impatient to move in, kept asking "What is it?" and saying "It's really light." I really had no idea! I was almost being a bit rude! Eventually I opened the cardboard box and noticed tissue paper and it started to dawn on me what was happening. And when I looked up at Sean and saw the tears in his eyes (this is NOT a man that cries) I definitely knew. He didn’t get down on one knee (which was fine with me, no begging required!), but he did say, “You know I want to spend the rest of my life with you, right?”. That just started the waterworks! After about three minutes of me crying and saying “Holy Crap!” I got to the ring box. Still being skeptical and not wanting to presume anything, I asked "Is it a locket with a photo of the house in it?". It wasn't! What an exciting way to start our lives at our new house together!
After that, we had my parents over and visited my grandma to tell her the news. The next day Sean’s parents and grandparents came over to celebrate with us too.
