Knot name: CharlieMaverick

Wedding Date: June 20, 2009, Oregon City, OR

Knot Annie: Tell me about the Knotties on the board that you post on and have you ever joined them for a get-together?

CharlieMaverick: The ladies on my board (Military Brides) are amazing. They are highly insightful and very helpful. A lot of them are already married so they understand military life and how to plan a military wedding, which is extremely helpful for those of us who are planning and about to join the “silent ranks” of being a military wife. It’s nice to be able to go to a place and ask questions and get great answers since no one I know personally is engaged to a man in the military.

Because the MBB is a national board (even international with the overseas ladies!), it’s really difficult to plan a large gathering. I hope to find other ladies who are stationed where I am, or nearby, to set up something in the future.

KA: Describe your wedding.

CharlieMaverick: My wedding will be a garden affair on a late Saturday morning in June. It’s a military wedding with the groom, best man, and one groomsman in uniform (two Air Force, one Army). The “feel” I am going for is modern-vintage yet dressy-casual. The colors are preppy: navy, bright green, and crisp white. The ceremony and reception are taking place at the same outdoor location, which speaks for itself, so I didn’t want super-bright colors to compete with the surrounding nature. We also have a mini theme of Top Gun, as that is our favorite movie, and we get our pet names from the main characters of the flick. We plan on using a few songs from the soundtrack and adding a few other surprise elements.

KA: How have the Knotties on your board helped you plan your wedding?

CharlieMaverick: The Knotties on the MBB have been super-helpful in a number of different ways. They have helped with all the formalities needed to plan my military wedding (what’s allowed, how certain things should progress, uniform details, etc.). They give great suggestions when I’m uncertain about a detail or idea. They are also highly understanding of my situation and are a fabulous support system when stresses arise.

KA: Favorite bio on The Knot and why?

CharlieMaverick: Redshoegirl is one of my all-time favorite Knotties. Her planning bio is super-inspiring. It is well organized and very helpful. I love her layout and her web design talent. She displays her information and pictures well with clear sections. Even without her professional wedding photos, I was able to envision her wedding almost exactly because her planning bio was so well thought out. Her “Favorite Knotties” section is great too. I love the direct links to the other people who have inspired her.

KA: Best vendor that you’ve worked with and why.

CharlieMaverick: My florist is my favorite vendor so far. Forte Flowers of Oregon City, Oregon, is THE best place to go. It’s right across from my venue, so Jennifer has lots of experience using the space (almost twice a weekend all summer!). Her vision with flowers is beyond amazing. I came in with my laptop, our colors, and ideas, and she added her flourish and expertise to my thoughts and came up with ideas that surpassed my expectations. I can’t wait until the big day so I can see how her creations come to life!

KA: What will make your wedding stand out to your guests and where did you find the inspiration?

CharlieMaverick: I think what will stand out is the thought we put into our wedding and how our wedding will reflect us. We are really laid-back and are trying to have as much fun with our wedding as possible without making it uptight. We are also thrifty and all about the DIY projects, so I hope our guests leave with a smile and a better feeling of who we are as a couple, as the personal touches will reflect us individually and us together as a couple.

KA: What are you looking forward to most on your wedding day?

CharlieMaverick: I’m looking forward most to spending time with the family. Most of the guests from my side are from Florida and California, and I haven’t seen them in years. It will be a fun get-together. We are doing to traditional things, like a first dance and father/daughter and mother/son dances, a cake cutting, and toasts, but other than that, not much else is planned so we can actually relax and mingle with guests.
