Cash Bar vs Open Bar

Posted Tuesday, June 23, 2009 5:47 PM

I originally intended on having an open bar so that our guests could drink to their hearts content and not have to worry about pulling out their wallets at all during the night. However, I've been trying to think about how many of them would realistically be drinking alcohol and it seems silly to have an open bar if only 10-20% of the guests would be utilizing it. Maybe there's a way we could pay for nonalcoholic drinks and maybe beer and wine, but have the liquor be on a cash system.

I would love to foot the bill for the bar, but we're already working on such a tight budget as it is... It seems tacky to have a cash bar, but I think it's the best option for us at this point.

re: Cash Bar vs Open Bar

I am on track with your thoughts...though in our case, I believe a TON of our guests will be drinking alcohol.  However my fiance and I are on an extremely tight budget footing the wedding bill myself basically.  In addition, neither of us drinks alcohol - period...not wine, not beer, not anything.  So we decided that we would have the bar serve unlimited sodas and punch and we will provide for the champagne toast but the rest of the alcohol will be on a cash basis.

I think it's a fair trade.  I don't think it's tacky as some people and magazines and shows suggest.  I believe that it is a matter of personal opinion as well as budget.  I have been to dry weddings where the B&G didn't serve ANY alcohol period and your guests hate it and leave early or sneak it in.  We didn't want to prevent anyone from drinking just because we don't, but we also don't think it's our place to have to provide it to them.  Go with your gut.  If your guests truly love you and want to celebrate with you, they won't mind having to pay for a couple of drinks if you are providing other beverages at no charge to them.
