Photography Ideas: Non-traditional Portrait Setups

Few things annoy me more than a portrait of a bride and a groom standing straight up and super-close with their arms at their sides. No one stands like that in real life! Couples tend to look uncomfortable in those shots. That's what makes this photo of Vanessa and Don who got married in Riverhead, NY, so great: The bride is unabashedly sassy by putting her hand on her hip, and the groom's laid-back personality shines through via his hand in his pocket. They're leaning into each other, but not on top of each other like those traditional portraits. There's nothing forced about it. (The simple gray barn as a backdrop helps too).
Let your photographer know that, in addition to totally candid shots, you want some setups that don't feel set up. These natural shots are the ones you'll want to frame -- save the prom-like photo for your newspaper announcement.
