In the News: Judge Asks, "What's the Harm in Permitting Gay Marriage?"

Posted Tuesday, October 27, 2009 6:06 PM

"What would be the harm of permitting gay men and lesbians to marry?" This was the question Judge Vaughn R. Walker posed to lawyer, Charles J. Cooper two weeks ago in a California court room: "Your honor, my answer is: I don't know," Mr. Cooper said. "I don't know."

Mr. Cooper's goal had been to get Judge Vaughn to dimiss a lawsuit, which seeks to establish a constitutional right to same-sex marriage. Following Mr. Cooper's I-don't-know concession, Judge Walker denied his motion in a ruling that has been viewed by some gay rights advocate as a bit of hope.

Hats off to you Judge Walker!

I come to The Knot to receive wedding advice. I have no problems with you giving gay wedding advice and such, but please do not make political statements here. If I wanted to read political statements about gay marriage (or any issue) I would have went to a news site and not The Knot.

hmph...No one threw a fit about you posting about the guy refusing to marry a interracial couple. This is the same thing in my opinion.

Re: "political statements" comment.  The blog is a way to make wedding topics and discussions absolutely current, and this is most definitely a wedding topic of interest to a lot of The Knot readers.  If you only want to read content geared toward "advice," then only read the content geared toward advice.  Simple as that.

Meredith and Anja, thanks for the coverage.
