My husband and I had always wanted a beachside, serene wedding--pretty much the antithesis of the typical dramatic red and gold Asian weddings, so we knew from the very beginning we would need to honor our Taiwanese Hakka heritage in other ways. One of the ways we chose to do it was to make sure that everyone felt involved on our wedding day through language.
The guests at our wedding spoke four primary languages: English, Mandarin Chinese, Taiwanese, and Hakka and everyone could read either written Chinese or English. Our simple ceremony programs featured a translated transcript of the ceremony speech in written Chinese so that even those who could not speak English could follow along during the wedding. We also brought in a translator to translate all of the speeches and toasts at the wedding so everyone including our oldest guests could share in the jokes and laughs. I was worried it might be awkward with the translation at first, but our groomsmen had fun working with the translator and she did such a fantastic job that everyone though it added to the level of fun.
