Mahalo! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Our Wedding Day We were married at Olowalu Plantation in Maui on June 5, 2008. The weather was perfect -- not too hot, not too windy, and not a drop of rain. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Getting Ready Getting ready at Olowalu was delightful. Dan Sanchez and Jessica Waite were both late, so my girls and I hung out on the edge of the ocean, skipping stones and chilling out. When Dan arrived, we lounged around chatting on the porch as he set our hair in curlers. My family and closest friends started arriving as Jessica did my make-up. We were all so relaxed even as other guests started arriving (early) and I was still wandering around the grounds in my curlers greeting them. Then I heard my Maid of Honor shrieking "The boys are here! The boys are here!" In an instant, the energy level kicked up considerably as the girls ushered me into the house and developed a sense of urgency. (DH and I opted not to see each other before the ceremony, so from that moment I had to stay inside the house until the start of the ceremony). ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Boys and the Rest of our Guests Arrive While my girls and I finished getting ready inside, DH and his groomsmen helped get set up outside. Our fabu photographer, Ka'ua, took some photos of the boys. As our guests arrived, each guest was presented with a lei and choice of beverage, including Mai Tais, Coronas, and Iced Tea, which helped set a festive tone for the event -- exactly what we were going for. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Girls Put on the Finishing Touches It was HOT inside the house (it didn't have air conditioning) and the constant coming and going of family, friends, and my girls getting ready generated a buzz in the house that replaced the serenity of the scene on the porch. Everyone was dripping sweat as we finished our hair and make-up, wrestled me into my dress, and declared ourselves ready to start the show, amazingly, right on time...except that my girls never got around to painting my nails as planned. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Ceremony Just before the ceremony, DH and I presented each member of our wedding party, respectively, with a green orchid lei. Our ceremony included music performed by Jamie Lawrence, a lei exchange, our own vows, a ring exchange, and a beautiful song by two of my best friends just before we were pronounced. I tried to look at my loved ones every now and then during the ceremony, but so many of them were tearing up that, for the sake of my make-up, I decided just to focus on DH. We did our fair share of tearing up too, but Pastor Ken's warm and funny remarks kept us smiling for the most part. Plus we were just so darn happy! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ We're Married! We hadn't intended to have a receiving line, but after we processed down the aisle and our guests followed us, it just kind of happened naturally. We signed the papers to make it official and then took some group photos. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I couldn't be happier with this location. It was right on the water, totally private, allowed us to play amplified music, bring in our own caterer and bartender, and was gorgeous even with only minimal decorations. In addition to loving the look and feel of Olowalu, we also loved the convenience of getting ready and having the ceremony and reception all at the same location. I have two caveats, however. First, if you are looking for a super fancy perfectly manicured place, you'd probably be better off someplace else. Olowalu Plantation, while elegant, definitely has a laid-back "earthy" feel. Second, the costs at Olowalu definitely add up. You have to rent tables, chairs, linens, and lighting, and have your caterer and bartender bring plates, utensils, glasses, and related items. Make sure to budget accordingly if you are renting a private estate like Olowalu.
Although we could have saved money by having our reception at a restaurant (where most of those costs are included), we were able to make cuts elsewhere in the budget to accommodate the rentals. At the end of the day, it was 100% worth it for us to go with Olowalu.
