BarnHunter - Happily Married!

September 8, 2007 - Cornerstone Gardens, Sonoma CA

Photography by Carolyn Quilicci (Lisa Lefkowitz Photography)

Quick-style Non-Pro Pics:

It was a very windy, but beautiful day in Sonoma. The dress - trashed after the second I stepped into it. My hair - flat after the windy dinner al fresco, but I was the happiest bride ever, shaking a tambourine on my booty and dancing all night long!

The Venue: Cornerstone Gardens, Sonoma California

We fell in love with Cornerstone the moment we arrived. I first learned of Cornerstone in a NY Times article; describing it as an outdoor museum for landscape architects. We were looking for something both unique and beautiful, and Cornersone was it for us.

Save the Date: Letter press coaster printed by Paper Monkey Press

Invitations

Lisa at Good On Paper did an unparalleled job of matching our invitations to the setting. Cornerstone borders an old bi-plane runway and is surrounded by rolling Carneros Valley hills. I basically designed the rest of the wedding around these invitations. She is the best!

The final product, updated 7/6/07

The invitations are letter pressed on Cranes Lettra (100% Cotton Paper) by Paper Monkey Press (~$2,000) Envelopes are from Paper Source.

Thank You Stationary: DIY

I bought the paper and envelopes from Paper Source and the stamps from Impress Rubber Stamps. I embossed them with embossing powder from PS and a heat gun from a craft store. About 250 TY notes for about $130 total.

More DIY Madness:

We made votive chandeliers to hang over the dance floor in the barn.

We made 4 using Plexiglass, washers, string and "Whirlies" purchased at CB2.com.

Table tents and escort cards with different albums that we love!

Our home-made Polaroid photo guest book

The Dress: Elizabeth Fillmore Bridal

First fitting, I plan to wear a much shorter veil

Shoes by Cole Haan and Nike - Charlize Air Pump ($275)

The Flowers: Dragonfly Floral, Healdsburg CA

We plan to use three color themes through the wedding. The ceremony will be all in white and green, dinner will be primarily green flowers and succulents on white table cloths, and dancing in the barn/lounge will be all orange. (~$3000)

Ceremony

We will use a green garland to frame the altar area, shown here in this terribly dark picture

Dinner

Succulents will be used in small bunches on either side of a large floral green and white centerpiece. 1 foral piece and 2 succulent arrangements per each 8' table. The succulent arrangements will be given away as living gifts at the end of the reception.

Barn Reception

We plan to use lots of orange Dahlias and whatever else comes in orange!

The barn at Cornerstone will be up-lit in amber lighting throughout with orange votive candles:

Lighting ATL Eevents ($2060)

We will have a fire pit outside the barn with a few lounges (no backs as shown here) from Wine Country Rentals. We will also have a few lounges inside the barn to rest tired feet. They will be in the light cream color shown here with orange blankets and pillows scattered about. ($1200)

Two blankets and a pillow from Ikea ($30 total)

The Wedding Party:

The Bridesmaids will wear Laundry by Shelli Segal in green ($98 from Saks on sale (fist pump - woo!))

The Groomsmen will wear Pierre Cardin from Mens Warehouse. ($200)

FI will wear a Ben Sherman 3 button black suit. All Groomsmen will wear matching black custom made thin(ish) ties by Greg Talbot. (Nordstrom $500)

Miscellaneous Fun Things!

I bought one of these from The Macbeth Collection in Orange to hold the programs ($48)

I bought 3 of these trays ($12) to hold dry rice and the escort cards, I also bought 2 of the vases to go on the same table with flowers in them ($6 each). Jamali Garden

While this orange is hideous, we plan to have cocktail napkins made that have funny little facts about us in them: Danny won the science fair 4 times in a row, or Jessica was once in a Public Service Announcement where she rapped about the evils of 6-pack rings (true story). (50 for $25 from For Your Party)

Green Wedding:

I'm unsure if it stems more from guilt for spending so much money to celebrate ourselves or from a true desire to do something good for the world... probably a bit of both, but we have decided to make our wedding as "green" as possible by taking the following steps that we would like to encourage others to do as well.

  • Offset the Carbon Footprint of your wedding - We have people traveling from all over California and the West coast to attend our wedding. Cars, trains and airplanes all emit greenhouse gases into the atmosphere that cause global warming. Carbonfund.org is a non-profit organization that purchases carbon credits and retires them (instead of allowing countries and corporations to pollute with them). You can easily do this HERE.
  • Keep it Local and Organic - We decided to go with a caterer who specializes in locally grown organic produce, meets, and cheeses. The Girl and The Fig in Sonoma CA, is very well known for outstanding wine country cuisine, but we also love them for their community/grower relations! Bonnie at Dragonfly Floral in Healdsburg, CA runs a beautiful organic and sustainably farmed flower company. Her creations are both beautiful and eco-friendly.
  • Save a Tree - Where possible, use recycled papers and tree-free materials. What better excuse to opt for Cranes beautiful all-cotton papers commonly used for letter press? (Green does not have to be hippy anymore!).
  • Don't Buy Blood Diamonds - Be sure that your diamond/s are bought and traded in accordance with the Kimberly Process. Diamonds and mining in general are destructive to the earth, but we are socialized little bride-bots who want pretty things - just try to be as responsible as possible when making your purchases. For more information go HERE.
  • Donate to Charity - In lieu of standard guest favors that are often tossed aside, use that money to make a donation in the name of your guests to a favorite charity of your choice. We are donating to breast cancer research (FI's step mother is currently battling breast cancer, so we felt this was an perfect option for us).
  • Buy Soy-Based Candles - They burn longer, they are healthier for people who suffer from athsma, they don't emit soot into the air, an most importantly they are not a petroleum bi-product. Click HERE to order.

These are generally easy requests to make of your vendors. If brides start to ask for green alternatives, the vendors will follow suit. No need to get crazy about it, just do the best you can where possible.
