vendor reviews

Photography - Thorsen Photography: A+++++
We were SO excited about our photography... this was the very first vendor we booked, and Dean did not let us down! He continually impressed me throughout the entire day! When we went out for pictures before the ceremony around the city he was like a man on a mission, scoping out the best lighting and picture perfect spots... I am glad he was so goal-oriented because me and the rest of the bridal party were all off in wedding la-la land. I really appreciated his focus and professionalism. He also got us our proofs back SO quickly, just 2 weeks after the wedding and we couldn’t be more thrilled! He definitely captured the essence of the day.  I would HIGHLY recommend Dean!

Cake - Cake Girls: A+++++
The cake was AMAZING!!!! It didn't come out exactly like the picture in my bio (which was what I was expecting) but I think it came out BETTER! It was absolutely beautiful and the cake inside was SOOO good! The girls at Cake Girls are extremely talented and they love what they do. They only make cakes (they dont have a bakery like many places do) so they are fully focused on making your cake the very best! Cake Girls definitely lived up to all of my expectations and went above and beyond. I would HIGHLY recommend them!

Invitations - Seedlings LLC: A+++++
We worked with Jenny who owns her own invitation design firm in Columbus, Ohio.  She was SO easy and sweet to work with.  She advertises custom invitations, and yes, they really are custom!  She let us take a lot of creative liberties… like I sketched the graphic that was used on the front of the invitation and I created the map myself and she inserted it into the design.  Since I was very picky about the invitations, this worked out well for us!  I would HIGHLY recommend Seedlings if you know exactly how you want your invitations to look.  She can definitely make it happen!

Venue & Florist - A New Leaf: A
We were kind of forced into using A New Leaf for our flowers since the venue is owned by the flower shop. Originally, I wanted to do my own flowers... But, it turned out just fine and worked out really well in the end. We worked with Brianna who is new there and I believe our wedding was her first. We were a little nervous about that to begin with. Every time we met with her and Michelle they just seemed super laid back about the flowers and it was somewhat hard getting answers out of them. I think they have just done so many weddings and kind of 'know the drill'. But you don't exactly pick out all of your flowers there, you just give them the 'look' that you want and some of your favorite flowers that are available during that season and they order what is available and then they only use what looks best when they get it in. When I first saw the bouquets on the wedding day I was a little disappointed because they weren't what I had pictured in my head, but then as the day went on, I realized how beautiful they were and that Brianna did such a good job with the colors and combinations. I was specific about having goldenrod in the reception space and she worked it in beautifully! And the whole 'naturalized' theme I wanted to carry through was very evident. In the end I can say that I am VERY happy with the flowers and A New Leaf! Everyone has been complimenting the venue for its uniqueness... it was definitely a hit and I am still in love with the place!

...I highly recommend A New Leaf!!!

Hair & Make-up - Elizabeth from Enzo's in Glenview: A+++++
I was VERY happy with how my hair and make up turned out. I have been getting my hair cut with Elizabeth since I was 10 and she knows how to handle my thick hair... she was SO much fun to have there... she is a blast to talk to and completely understood the look I was going for - natural.  She did a great job and I would highly recommend her!

Videography - REM Videography: A
This was kind of our last minute splurge. We waited till like 1 month before the wedding to book REM. I honestly didn’t even research any other videographers, so I cant say that he was the best fit for us... but his work seemed good so we went for it. There just wasn’t enough time at that point to be picky. We worked with Robert and he was SUPER nice and easy to work with. Him and Dean seemed to work well together coordinating the shots as well. I cant really critique all of his work yet since i haven’t seen the final product yet. But I will give him an A so far because he kept the energy levels up and was really great the day-of.

Caterer - Blue Plate Catering: B
We worked with Kelly Milam and she was absolutely amazing!! She was so sweet and very helpful throughout the planning process. Unfortunately she couldn’t be there on the wedding day so Jessica Lussier took over for her. Jessica was great as well! The reason I would give them a B though is because we did passed Hour douerves (sp) and cocktails and they just didn't get enough food out to all the guests. Kelly assured me ahead of time that everyone would be stuffed but, some people told me they never even saw the food or only got 1 or 2 things. The other negative is that, it is true what other knotties have said about Blue Plate... the food is just not the same as at the tasting. Many of the hour dourves that were supposed to be hot came out luke warm or cold, and they just didn't taste as good as at the tasting, so that was a little disappointing. The other negative thing is that they only came to the venue 2 hours before the wedding began to set-up. However, my Mom had to wait until they got there to set-up all of our other things, like the candy buffet, the sashes on the chairs, etc... She said she was extremely rushed and almost didn’t get it all done before the wedding. Besides those things... I was super happy and excited about the passed lemonade and iced tea that we had in the courtyard... it was SO beautiful and so fun to drink cause they put sugar on the rims of the glasses! ...that was just something fun and cute. And otherwise, I would say that they did a good job and were very accommodating. I cant say I would highly recommend them though just because the final product wasn’t great.

DJ - Beep Media: B
We worked with Matt and picked Beep Media because they were so accommodating with the 'non-cheesy' wedding music. We pretty much hand picked almost every song that was played at the wedding from our own playlists and he played them for us. So, it was really nice to have songs we actually liked being played. Evidently, everyone liked the songs too because the dance floor was PACKED!! At one point we were bumping in to everyone because there were so many people dancing! The reason I give them a B is because Matt was a little weird the day of the wedding, like we decided to leave a little bit early from the reception and he acted like it was a huge inconvenience for him... which it might have been, but it was our wedding, we can do what we want. It was just little things like that... like he gave us some attitude at points when it just wasn’t really necessary. AND he played a couple songs that my Mom was pretty clear on that she didn’t want played because of 'suggestive lyrics' haha... i thought it was funny, but he did ignore what she told him. Anyway... in general he did well... we got our good music and some awesome dancing! I was happy! =)

 Transportation - Chicago Rolls Royce Limo and Trolley: B
They did a good job. I can’t say I was crazy about the 'just married' sign and cheesy wedding decor on the windows of the trolley especially because we used the trolley before the wedding so we weren’t married yet, but in general it worked out. I give them a B because we got off to take pictures at Millennium Park and Dean told the driver where to meet us and when and when we went to find the trolley it wasn’t there! We ended up waiting on the street corner for what seemed like 20 minutes in the heat... I think everyone that walked by thought we were stranded, haha. He finally appeared around the corner though and picked us up. I am guessing that the cops or traffic directors made him move... Anyway, the trolley was fine. It did the job.

Tuxes - After Hours: C
What can you say about After Hours? They are just average. I got the kind of suits I wanted.... they were more like a suit that a tux, so that was nice. And they had yellow striped ties so I was happy with that. But... of course some of the guys stuff didn’t quite fit on the first try. They got things all squared away but in general, I am not a huge fan of After Hours just because they are a huge chain store and it is really hard to make changes to your orders when you need to. They were ok.

Lighting - Chicago Lighting Design: C
We wanted a little extra lighting on some of the walls at A New Leaf just to brighten some areas up and give it a little more depth. My Mom found this place and we decided to use them because they were a lot cheaper than some of the other ones we looked at... and it was 'just lighting'... how can you mess that up, right? We worked with Len and he was weird straight from when we met him the first time. He just seemed kind of controlling and like 'he would handle everything'. I guess I wont go into the long boring details but the day of... he moved some of the lights around and they were NOT what we wanted at ALL! This happened right before the ceremony and DH was really upset with the guy. We got things cleared up but... Len was just not our favorite vendor. He stressed us out more than anything when lighting is such a minor, easy thing that should not be complicated. ...I would not recommend them.

Wedding Night Hotel - The Drake: C
We stayed here the night of the wedding... it was my dream to stay here since I was a little kid. Unfortunately I was slightly disappointed. When we got there they had a huge mix up with our room reservation (even though we had called to confirm it like 3 times... it was supposed to be a lake view room)... anyway we ended up switching rooms 3 times (in my dress and him in his tux!) ...We spent an hour just getting settled... it was quite frustrating. And in the end... I wasnt even that impressed with the room we ended up in. The decor was all outdated 'trying to look fancy' furniture from the 60's. It just wasn’t all that great. The only thing that made up for it was the complimentary breakfast on the 11th floor overlooking the lake the next morning. But in general, I was disappointed.

 Honeymoon - Honeymoon Review: A++++
We went to Rome, the Cinque Terre and then Paris for 10 days total. It was absolutely amazing! SO much to see! Rome was perfect... it is a smaller city than I thought and we managed to see everything we wanted in just 2 days. We did everything there on foot and enjoyed some amazing food and the nice people.

We took trains the the Cinque Terre which is north of Rome on the coast. We stayed in the town of Monterosso which was unbelievably beautiful!! I would highly recommend this town because the beaches are the best here and there is a lot to do... a little touristy but otherwise its amazing. We did the 'hike' between all 5 towns one day and it is NOT easy! 9 kilometers of hills and ancient stone steps... need i say more... but it was WELL worth the views of the towns and the exploration of the other villages. The lovers walk is also a MUST!

For our last 3 days of the trip we spent them in Paris. It is a BEAUTIFUL city with such rich history and amazing sites. It is HUGE though and we definitely wore ourselves out walking from place to place. By then end of the time there we were old pros at using the Metro... the best way to get around... I was not impressed with the people there... they are quite rude and lack the politeness that I take for granted in America. I also was not impressed with the dinners we had there... they were long, drawn out and it took forever to get the check and get out of there... however the pastry shops and lunches are to die for! Love the crepes!!! We also did Versailles one day as well... and decided we needed 3 days to see everything there we wanted... but we are both Landscape Architects and spend the whole time enjoying the gardens. Anyway, the European honeymoon was a blast! I would highly recommend it if you like cities and traveling!
