Redshoegirl's Planning Bio
_______________________________________________
______________________________________________
Obligatory disclaimer - if you see a photo that is yours and you haven't received credit, please page me on the Hawaii board (or if you want anything else, that's the easiest way to get in touch with me as well). As far as my bio goes, steal as many images as you like - I've already plastered my name on anything that's important to me; all I ask is that you please don't tamper with the image to remove it. Note: if a photo is credited to a particular knottie, most of the time the photo will also be a link to their bio (sometimes the bio no longer exists). I've also linked most products to their website, if applicable (e.g., if you like Mr. Redshoegirl's cufflinks, click on the image to visit the online store).
Important, please read...
as I said, I'm more than happy for you to take as many images as you want - however, when you take them, PLEASE right-click on the photo to save it to your computer, then re-upload it to your own photo hosting account. If your bio links directly to my images, it will be consuming
my
bandwidth - meaning that my quota will be rapidly used up and we will both end up with bios full of red Xs instead of photos! Thanks!
I get a lot of questions about how to set up quick links in bios -
for instructions on how to do this if you use NVU!
Search knottie bios for vendors, themes, ideas and whatever else you want!

A short introduction...
We met in 2003 and were friends for a couple years before we finally figured out that we were crazy about each other. I'm American, he's Australian, and after much debate we've decided to kinda sorta elope to Oahu - only our parents will be present, and we're following up with two at-home receptions - one in Los Angeles and one in Sydney.
(If you are thinking of eloping,
for my thoughts - whatever they're worth...)
Yes, that's a real location in the picture on the left. For some reason, everyone seems to think it's a painted backdrop. And I'm looking insanely pleased with myself at Disneyland in the right picture.

I dreamed of a wedding of elaborate elegance...
A church filled with flowers, friends and beautiful music...
I asked him what kind of a wedding he wished for...
He said one that would make me his wife.
~ Anon.
Color impact...
because we're eloping, things are fairly casual. We won't have decorations at our ceremony, and the receptions will be minimal as well. That said, we want something bright and fun - mostly the goal is just to end up with something that won't make us shudder when we look at the photos 30 years from now! We've ended up with a mostly pink and orange palette:

The rings...
ahh...my preeeecious
...a classic solitare, totally timeless - I love it! I've gone for a simple and clean look with a plain 2mm white gold wedding band that I found for an amazing 75% off at
Overstock.com
(with an additional 15% discount - thank you
naughtycodes
and
retailmenot
)! Mr. Redshoegirl picked out a 6mm white gold grooved band from Dora that we ordered from
Gillett's
(Australian jewelry website).
Ceremony notes...
I found this to incorporate my engagement ring into the ceremony - love it!
"The engagement ring is a symbol of promise and intention. Now the intention is realized and the promise fulfilled.
Please place your engagement ring on [Bride's name] finger over her wedding band to symbolize that the love
that brought you together will always protect and sustain your marriage."
The proposal...
for anyone interested in the schmoopy stuff: I went home early from work as I was feeling sick that day; when he arrived home later, he kept urging me to go to the beach with him. I didn't feel like walking around in the sun, but he kept insisting, so I finally snarled, gave in and stomped out to the car. LOL the poor man was just trying to be romantic! Eventually coaxed me along the beach and proposed on the spot where we first kissed. And since I'm a big nerd:

Ceremony...
we've chosen the "secret beach" near the
Ihilani Hotel
-
the only access is through the Ihilani grounds, so it is very private and secluded
:
A special thanks to super knottie
MrsRoxstar808
and her awesome DH for these photos! The rest can be viewed

.
Rehearsal dinner...
we're not sure yet if we're going to do a "rehearsal dinner" (there's nothing to rehearse!) but we thought it might be fun to act like the tourists that we are and go to
Germaine's Luau
anyway:
Wedding dinner...
ideas for our little wedding dinner are the restaurant at the Ihilani,
Azul
(left) or the
Roy's
that is located in the resort (yummy food photo on the right):

The search for vendors is officially over! Click on the logos to visit their websites.
Photographer - booked!
To see Frank's work is to love it! Seriously, the man is incredibly talented. I don't even like having my photo taken, but I can't wait for our wedding day because I'm so excited about our pictures! He's also very flexible with his time and the services he offers, and will work with you to create a package within your budget.
Videographer - booked!
Josh is primarily a photographer, but he also books videography (shot by the lovely Christine) - his company is very budget friendly without being amateur.
Florist - booked!
Watanabe Floral were the most affordable and helpful of the 64,357 florists I contacted. OK, maybe it wasn't quite that many, but I got in touch with pretty much every wedding and non-wedding florist in the south of Oahu. It was a huge challenge to find a vendor who would provide such a small order (one bouquet and one bout) without charging an arm and a leg. I considered DIY, but because you have to buy South American roses in batches of 2 dozen (and I want several colors of roses), it wouldn't have been any cheaper - and we would have had a TON of flowers leftover!
Hair & Makeup Artist - booked!
I've booked the ever popular Dorys Foltin, who is highly recommended by Oahu knotties - I'm a little nervous because I won't be able to have a trial, but from what I've seen she's absolutely amazing.
Officiant - booked!
Rev Mike Nelson
is an awesome guy and customizes his ceremonies to each couple, which we love (
mrsmckenty
recently raved about the wonderful job he did at her wedding). I have to say, finding an officiant would be easier if more of them had websites for us destination brides!

The dress...
after a long and frantic day of shopping in Sydney (yes, just
one
day...7 hours...that's all I had to find a dress - no pressure or anything), I've chosen
Maggie Sottero - Melena
. I was a bit nervous about trying on slim line dresses - love the style, but I was terrified of looking like a big sparkly sausage. Amazingly, it was the most flattering style, even though I'm far from a size 2. I ordered through
Chrissy O Bridal
and highly recommend them as a vendor - they're very kind and helpful and have great prices! (
for details of my bargain gown shopping.)
Obviously, this is not me:
I Update - it's here!...
after a very impatient 6 months, my dress has arrived! Of course I had to put it on right away...and ladies, let me tell you: never try to put on a corset backed dress by yourself. It's a bitch. Once I finally got myself laced into the thing after 45 minutes of neck breaking struggles, a delivery guy knocked at the door. I answered it and we stared at each other for a minute before I finally said, "I'm really not crazy." He laughed and told me it was a good thing he wasn't the groom or it would have been bad luck... Anyhoo, here I am in all my frumpy glory (and with a VERY badly laced back)...unfortunately the photos are really poor quality and you can't see all the lace and beading detail, but you get the general idea:
Dress twins...
this isn't one of the most popular Maggies, so finding other girls who chose it was a bit of a challenge -
Kirakiuh
and
pennylane29
are wearing it as well.
Paying it forward...
if you're not planning on keeping your dress,
Brides Against Breast Cancer
is a great charity to consider; brides donate their gowns to be sold, and the proceeds go towards granting wishes for patients who are losing their battle against breast cancer.
Boy stuff...
Mr. Redshoegirl has decided he'd like to wear a charcoal colored suit, so we'll look something like this:
The noose...
some of the contenders for his tie (that we've been able to agree on!):
The winner...
the pink and orange stripe tie from
Charles Tyrwhitt
! And on sale, too:
Here he is...
after a bit of cajoling, Mr.Redshoegirl agreed to a little photo shoot to show off his spiffy new threads (yaay for sales! we got the suit for 25% off). The shoot started off well, but his true nature revealed itself pretty soon:
Here's a closeup - the colors are a little off because of the flash, but you get the idea:

AHR dress...
since I'm donating my wedding dress, I need something to wear to the AHRs. The LA dinner is dressier than Sydney, although still far from formal - on the left is the sweet little number I'll be in that night (sorry the photos are kinda crappy - bad lighting, and I felt too lazy to try any harder...trust me, it's much nicer looking in person), and the black wrap dress is for Sydney (basic yes, but I have plans to punch it up a bit with truly awesome red shoes - check them out below):
Foot candy...
how awesome are these?!? Seriously, I'm in love with both of them. The silver pair on the left are by Nine West and match the detailing on the white dress; and following in the footsteps of the gorgeous
myday1708
, I've sprung for a fabulous pair of red patent stiletto Mary Janes (has a greater phrase ever been uttered?) to wear to the Sydney AHR:
Accessories...
I've collected Murano glass jewelry for years, with everything from modern interpretations to vintage pieces passed down to me by my Italian grandmother; I love how unique every piece is, and the strong tradition behind it. What do you think of teaming a necklace with the red shoes for the Sydney AHR?
left to right

Bling..
.not a lot to report in the jewelry department. I'm not going to buy a bridal set that isn't really my style and I'll never wear again, and I'm not a tiara girl. I already have a pair of pearl earrings like the ones on the left that I will probably wear...but since we all like looking at sparkly things, here are some other pretties as well:
More bling..
.I finally caved and bought a super sparkly hair comb from eBay seller
Crystal Palace Treasures
...I love it and can't wait to wear it!
Something blue..
.I'm joining the blue ring brigade! Mr.Redshoegirl asked me a few weeks before Christmas about the old/new/borrowed/blue tradition. I told him my garter would be my something blue and didn't think any more about it until he gave me this beautiful blue topaz ring for Christmas, saying that I should have a "better something blue" for our wedding! (Amazingly enough, he had no idea about the whole blue ring trend.) He liked this style the best, but it was only available in yellow gold (which I don't wear), so having it rhodium plated was the rest of my present - here are before and after pics:
PSA about rhodium plating - skip this if you don't want technical info...
a few girls have seen that I'm getting this ring plated and have exclaimed what a good idea it is, so I thought I'd post some quick info in case you're thinking of doing this. You should know that this is NOT a good solution for everyday jewelry. White gold is a light grey metal composed of yellow gold mixed with a white metal - usually nickel or palladium - and then rhodium plated to make it whiter and shinier and harder wearing (rhodium is similar to platinum). Although you
can
plate yellow gold directly, it won't last very long with everyday wear - often only about 3 months - before the yellow gold is showing through and it will need to be replated. Since this is a special occasion ring, I estimate that I'll only need it replated once a year (or less) - but if you want to wear a piece of jewelery every day, you are much better off getting it completely reset.
Boy bling...
Mr. Redshoegirl and I compromised: he'd wear the stripey pink tie as long as he could get some funky cufflinks...do we go for Transformers, pirate, the patriotic Australian map, or the fun 'drinking arm' cufflinks?
And the winner is...
pirate cufflinks! Arrrgh matey! (Hey, the cufflinks are a good compromise; Mr.Redshoegirl originally suggested having the wedding on
International Talk Like A Pirate Day
- for realsies!)
More boy bling...
I agonized over what to get Mr. Redshoegirl as a wedding gift. Most of the stuff he wants are computer upgrades, but sorry hon - not as a wedding present! I'd been eyeing the uber cool
Seiko Kenetic
watches for a while, knowing how they'd appeal to his nerdy side, but they were a bit more than I wanted to spend...until I found the new perpetual calendar model at Amazon.com for nearly 50% off! Woohoo!
(The minute hand looks blurry because the watch had been stationary for a while, so the kenetic mechanism had gone to sleep - I got a geeky thrill when the hands started whirring around to catch up to the current time again.)
Veil...
I debated for a long time whether or not I wanted a veil - I wasn't planning on wearing one. But then I thought to myself, when am I ever going to be able to get away with this again? I love the sheer look of drop veils, although I have never seen one in action on the beach (I might be the first!), so I caved and ordered a custom veil from
Occansey Designs
:
.
Bonus links...
since this isn't the most popular veil style, I had to search a bit to find great photos - this is not an exhaustive list, just the ones I was the most inspired by:
Update...
my veil has arrived! It's
exactly
what I wanted, and I highly recommend
Occansey Designs
- excellent prices, totally customized products and owner Kathy is a very helpful and kind soul who patiently answered my many (probably dumb) questions. Mr. Redshoegirl took these photos for me, and got distracted halfway through, so I only have headshots. (Which is actually rather fortunate as my ass looks huge in that dress...) Excuse the bad lighting and how ratty I look - I'd just gotten home from a long day at work, but of course I was WAY too eager to wait for a better hair and make-up day:
Side note: for those of you who complain about how your eyelashes aren't long enough: I envy you. I've been "blessed" with very long eyelashes, and the reason I'm making faces is because the tulle kept catching on them - I get the same problem when I try on sunglasses, and it SUCKS.
Bonus details...
I was a little obsessive over veils for a while. OK, a lot obsessive. I would stare at wedding photos and try to figure out the exact length and width of veils I liked so that I could get mine made precisely the way I wanted it. So on the off chance that anyone else out there is as much of a neurotic control freak as I am, here are the stats on my veil: plain cut edge, 70" wide, 118" total length with a clear comb attached at 30" to create a blusher. (The special 70" width is so that it's very sheer when draped over the top of the head, instead of bunching at the crown and creating creases over my face.)
Garter...
I never thought of myself as a garter girl until I saw the gorgeous ones made by
The Garter Maker
. Plus, how often do you get to wear one of these in polite company? My garter is baby blue with a white ribbon and a monogram patch sewn on the inside (I'm not really into the monogram craze, but eh - why not?):
Update...
as of Dec 31, 2007 the Garter Maker will be handing over the reins to Shelli of
Monde Design
- Shelli does fabulous work (check out her gorgeous ring pillows), so I'm sure the business will be in good hands! If you'd rather go through a different company,
Angel Threads
creates similar products and gets excellent reviews on the Dress board.
Clutch...
lately I've been obsessed with these - I don't even know why, since I probably won't bother getting one. But I like these from the eBay seller
Closet Affair
:
Update...
super knottie
99vintageglam
introduced me to the fabulous
Lily Wigglesworth
collection, and now I'm coveting these to a truly insane degree...I'm dying to have the one with the peacock feathers for our AHRs, but £85 is a bit too pricey:

The perfect shoes...
I love shoes, so finding a pair for our wedding was a long process - especially since all my favorite styles of heels are impossible to wear on the beach! I'm anti flip-flop and was worried that blingy sandals might catch on the lace hem of my dress. I fell in love with a cute lace pair by Report, and after finding them on sale at
Amazon
for only $12.79 (75% off!), I knew it was meant to be! Hopefully they'll look as cute on me as they did on knottie
neilsapril
:

Hair...
I have mid-length curly hair - might as well work with what I've got!
I might wear my hair down at the AHRs:
Makeup...
for makeup, I want something fresh looking with a bit of emphasis on the eyes. The Minka Kelly look (top left) is my front runner - if I could look as insanely gorgeous as her, that would be great, thanks!

My love affair with paper...
I'm a paper products whore: stationery stores are my crack houses. I fell in love with this design by
White Aisle
, but wanted something a little more customized:
Digital mockup...
here are
shameless rip-offs
my totally original and unique designs that I created in Photoshop. I've changed the fonts since this was created, but the layout is the same:
The real thing...
here they are in the flesh! Or paper. Whatever.
Labels! That's right, I'm an etiquette rebel. Judge me if you want. (Thanks to to
lisakeiko
and
Martha Stewart
for the idea.)
PSA:
I didn't use the Martha Stewart template, although I'm sure it's fine. I measured out the dimensions I wanted and then created the layout in Photoshop - you could probably use MS Word/Powerpoint/Publisher if you're not familiar with Photoshop. They were printed on full sheet label paper and trimmed to size with a paper cutter (5 labels per sheet).
Envelopments
5x7 portable pockets in Azalea.
As well as being my label muse, the fab
lisakeiko
did the printing for me - how amazing do these look?!?
I'm in love with my double layer bellybands, which I used for guest names in lieu of an inner envelope.
Detail shot of the liner paper ("Catherine" from
The Paper Place
) and the beautiful linen finish texture of the cardstock.
Thanks...
my DIY devotion doesn't extend to thank you cards. Some ideas, all from the fabulous
weddingpaperdivas
:
Update...
we're going with this design and wording - I like how clean and simple it is, and reminiscent of our invite design:
Place cards...
here are our last minute place cards for the Los Angeles AHR. They were printed on normal paper and then cut to size and made a bit stiffer by adding a floral paper backing (I knew those invite liner scraps would come in handy for something!). Also note the cheapy paper flap alternative to proper place card holders:
"Day of" timeline...
something I didn't plan on making. Then my dad asked me for a schedule of our wedding day, and after typing it out, I realized it really
would
be simpler with a graphic! Clipart is from
Microsoft
(I customized some) and the layout was done in Photoshop. Nothing special, but a few people wanted to see it - oh, and the text is clearer when it's full size:
Heh...
my dad is so cute. He asked me why the photographer was arriving at 3.30pm if the ceremony wasn't for another hour. Guess detail/getting ready shots weren't in vogue when he got married?

Color splash...
I love vibrant, bold bouquets - the splash of color will look spectacular on the beach! We're using roses and orchids in pinks and oranges, with beargrass for an accent:

These are the little things that are truly personal...the tiny touches that are "us"...
Bouquet wrap...
our wedding is on the fourth anniversary of the day my beautiful and gracious aunt lost a long and difficult battle with cancer. We were very close, and a day rarely goes by that I don't think of her. I would like to remember her in a quiet way, so I'm planning to wrap a
lavender ribbon
around my bouquet stems in her honor. No, it won't match my colors, and most people will probably think it's out of place - the important thing is that it will be meaningful to me and my father:
Something old...
this cameo brooch belonged to my grandmother - when she passed away, it was given to me. I'll attach it to my bouquet with the lavender ribbon:
Guestbook...
it took ages to decide what to do for this. We really wanted something that we would treasure in the future, not just put aside on a shelf and forget about - we wanted something we would use and appreciate, and that would make us smile every time we saw it. We both love
The Princess Bride
; we love the movie and we love the book by William Goldman. I know it's geeky, but since it's so meaningful for us, we've decided to ask our guest to write messages in the margins of the book. Our paperback has taken a battering, so we've bought a new hardcover copy. The book on the left is an incredible red letter first edition, and we'd have been able to die happy if we owned it...however, it's also $700. Ouch. So we've gone for the cheaper 25
th
anniversary reprint from
Amazon
instead:
Guestbook pen...
this is one of those instances where I let the Knot get to me. Couldn't possibly just have a plain pen now, could we? :-P Since the book will be passed around tables at the AHRs instead of sitting in one place all night, we needed a pen that would be easily moved with the book. My idea was to make a pen that would be a bookmark as well - this is a rough mockup (the ribbon on the pen isn't as smooth or tight as it will be when I do it for real):
________________________________________________
_______________________________________________
The little details that knotties love, so special I've put them in their own section...plus they really don't fit anywhere else...
Ring orb...
I'm not a fan of frilly ring pillows and was racking my brain to think of an alternative, especially considering we're going to have to ask one of our parents to carry the rings. Mr. Redshoegirl suggested just carrying them in a pocket, but I'm way too neurotic for that - I had visions of the rings dropping through a hole or something and us frantically searching the beach with a metal detector! I was sooooo excited to find this awesome orb in
MrsMek
's bio; I absolutely love it, and best of all, we can keep using it to store jewelry after the wedding:
Update #1 - it's here!...
My photos show the true colors better than the previous images; the exterior is an intense copper and the interior is a soft blue. It arrived in an awesome padded box - I've put my ring in one of the halves for scale:
Update #2 - about the orbs...
after
a post Weddingbee
featured my orb, I got a TON of questions - so here are some answers, all in one handy dandy place. First up, the important bit: the artisan that makes these is no longer producing them, so when they're gone - they're gone! Although I got mine from
Scarlett Alley
, they no longer carry them, and I've heard that
Uncommon Goods
are out of stock as well - I believe
Everyday Artifact
still has a few, but only in three color combinations: copper with lavender interior, lavender ceramic exterior with pale blue interior, and pale blue ceramic exterior with lavender interior.
Side note...
MrsMek
mentions that you should put a bit of clear nail polish over the text in the orbs to keep the words from chipping. Although this worked fine for me, one girl told me that her words smeared a tiny amount, and another girl mentioned that hers disappeared completely! So please be aware that is a risk - I used brand new nail polish and gently dabbed (not smeared) the polish on the words - I don't know if technique makes a difference?
Update #3 -
we should start a club...

Toasting flutes...
I didn't plan on getting these, as neither Mr.Redshoegirl or I drink champagne...however, we received them for free when we registered for our china (pattern on right), so now we have toasting flutes:
Nerd alert!...
I bought Mr.Redshoegirl this shirt from
Endless Tees
- he's a gaming geek and will love it (note - these shirts seem to run about a half size large, so order accordingly - also, even though I ordered the "heavy" shirt, the material is still fairly thin - I'd hate to see what the regular material is like!):
Legos!...
Mr.Redshoegirl LOVED his Legos as a kid, so for a silly gift I got him this little bride and groom (free from
Lego
). I couldn't resist a little photo shoot, because I am unbelievably geeky:
More info...
I get a lot of questions about these little guys, so here's a few more details...
...
yes, they're totally, absolutely, 100% free. No need to pay for shipping or anything. Just call or email Lego's customer service department (
) and tell them you're engaged and want to get a bride and groom set. Mention the color you'd like the bride's hair to be to get a truly customized set!
...
someone asked me about an instruction booklet - they don't come with one, but there aren't that many pieces; even if you're not a Lego enthusiast you'll be able to assemble them without any problems.
...
yours will look different than mine. They don't actually give out the sets in Australia, but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway - for some reason they forwarded my request to Sweden, which is where my figures were sent from. The American set is much cuter, with an all white dress for the bride, a little pink stand, a bouquet and a goblet!
Important update...
Lego is no longer giving these away.

The venue...
we estimate we'll have around 50 guests at our laid back dinner. We thought it would be nice to treat our guests to Hawaiian fusion cuisine, so Roy's Restaurant is the winner:
The cake...
we're going with a dessert from the restaurant instead of a traditional cake, but I thought I'd leave these up as inspiration for others:
___________________________________________
__________________________________________
The venue...
this reception will be held at the house of Mr. Redshoegirl's aunt and uncle in northern Sydney - in the interest of protecting their privacy, I'm not going to put photos online. I will say this though: their wine cellar is to die for!
Update...
there's been some last minute mind-changing - the aunt and uncle decided that they'd rather not have the dinner at their house after all. Since it was just 3 months before the event, we knew we wouldn't be able to find a venue in Sydney (Saturday night in peak wedding season? Not happening!), so we transferred the location to Bathurst. We'll have dinner and drinks at
The Oxford
, our favorite pub. Not our #1 choice, but sometimes you just gotta roll with the punches!
The cake...
Mr. Redshoegirl's parents used to own a bakery, and his mother has offered to bake our cake. I was hoping to do a cupcake tower to fit in with the casual theme of the party, but FMIL has nixed that in favor of a sheet cake. Honestly, I'm not thrilled about the idea, but I'm hardly going to go to war over baked goods with my future in-laws, especially when she's making such a generous gesture. I've spent ages looking for nice sheet cakes (i.e., ones that aren't covered with hideous glunky pastel roses last seen at weddings circa 1985). Please ignore the fact that only one of these is actually a sheet cake - I think all of these decorating ideas could be modified to something usable:
Flat...
maybe some smooth graphics across the top of the cake?
Fruit...
the grooms cake from knottie
craddy
's wedding looks yummy! Strawberries are my favorite food, but maybe with vanilla icing instead of chocolate (I hate chocolate...and yes I know that's weird):
Phrases...
this might be beyond our decorating skills, but covering the top of the cake with text would be fun - and I loooooove the cookie letters on the right:
Following along with the cookie idea, this is a very rough idea of what I'm thinking of (yes it's a total hack job in Photoshop - what can I say, I was tired when I made it). I think it needs something around the edge to act as a frame, but I don't like the poofy icing...any ideas? It's a very casual design, but this is a casual party. Maybe with a big bowl of bride and groom cookie on the side as well? Yeah...it is too cheesy, isn't it?

Oahu...
we'll spend a few nights before and after the wedding on Oahu at the
Ihilani Hotel
:
The Big Island...
then we're flying to the Big Island to spend three nights in the Kilauea Room at the
Volcano Village Lodge
, our awesome B&B just outside the
Volcanos National Park
...we are so happy we found this place - it's private and gorgeous and is also surprisingly inexpensive (compared to much of the overpriced and outdated accommodation in the area):
We're also doing a tour of the volcano area with
Paradise Helicopters
- Mr. Redshoegirl is so excited about this! I doubt we'll see this much action, but it should still be fun:
Anaheim...
while we're in LA for the AHR, we'll spend three nights at Disney's
Paradise Pier Hotel
- yeah, Disneyland isn't exactly original, but I grew up going there all the time and still go every chance I get:

Poochbutt...
my Christmas present for Mr. Redshoegirl last year was a puppy! He's an Australian Cattle Dog (aka a red heeler). Since Mr. Redshoegirl is an incredibly nerd, he named the dog Korben, after Korben Dallas from

We're total geeks, so we built our own wedding website from scratch - the first set are a few sample screenshots from the main website, and the second set are from the Top Secret Planning section (just for all the ladies in my family!):

Sorry guys! I've moved this section to my married bio, so I don't have to update it in two places.

I have mixed feelings about the advice section of bios. Sometimes it's useful. Sometimes it's annoying. Mostly it's common sense. I'm not egocentric enough to think that my advice is any more valuable than anyone else's, but hey, you never know when someone might pick up a helpful hint - so here are some of my thoughts as I'm going through the planning process...
Negotiate.
We have a modest budget for our wedding, and when we first started planning, I kept reading tips about negotiating with vendors. I hate negotiating. H-a-t-e. I'm not one of those women who enjoy going to flea markets and haggling down to the last penny. I don't like visiting markets in countries where bartering is a way of life - call me a cultural wuss if you want, but I'd rather just pay sticker price because negotiating is way out of my comfort zone and makes me extraordinarily uncomfortable. But you know what - it works! I knew the photographer we fell in love with was out of our price range; after I got his initial quote, I told him we adored his work and were dying to hire him, but that unfortunately we had to bow to the Almighty Budget Gods...so was there any way the price could be trimmed to fall within our budget? He was open and wonderful and willing to work with us, and agreed to adapt the package to meet our budget. Woohoo!
Compromise is OK.
Maybe you have an unlimited budget and can ignore this part. If so, I'm sincerely happy for you. And also very jealous. Anyway, sticker shock hits most of us pretty hard; sometimes you have to step back and just say, "OK, this is what I want - but it's impossible. So let's move on to the next best thing." Case in point: my dress. It's not my dream dress. That costs thousands, and I simply can't justify spending that much on something I'm only going to wear for a few hours - yes it's our wedding, yes it's important, but it is NOT worth going into debt over what is ultimately
just...a...dress
. The gown I chose meets all the requirements: it's pretty, it's flattering and - tada! - it fits the budget.
Keep things in perspective.
I know a lot of girls are probably screaming at me that I'm silly, that I should ignore the cost and buy my dream dress. But you know what? On our wedding day, I could be wearing a burlap bag and not care, because I'll be marrying Mr. Redshoegirl. The commitment we are making to each other is far more important than a piece of clothing. There are so many gorgeous weddings and fabulous ideas on the Knot, and sometimes I get all caught up in wanting to have the bestest, biggest, most fantabulous wedding ever - but ultimately, that's not what this day is about.
Shop around.
Then after you've done that, shop around some more - there's always someplace else selling the same thing for cheaper. Once again I'll mention my dress...it would have been easy to get caught up in the excitement of the moment at the bridal salon and just plonk down my credit card, but I saved a stack of money by buying my gown online. I know some people think that naming prices is rude, I but I find it helpful...so here's a breakdown of what I ended up paying after I got quotes from what felt like a million different bridal shops (there are a lot of other great stores such as

Important update (Feb 9, 2008):
Maggie Sottero has started cracking down on unauthorized dealers, and Lee Philip Bridal is no longer allowed to sell their gowns - I
think
the others listed here are all authorized (with the possible exception of A Fairy Tale Wedding).
Eloping.
At one point or another, practically every stressed out bride seems to throw up her hands and scream, "Forget it - let's just elope!" Well, we are eloping, but for far different reasons: my family is in the USA, his is in Australia, and we swiftly realized that getting everyone in the same place was going to be more or less impossible. So we canned the traditional wedding. If you are considering doing the same, I have a few words of advice - take them for what they're worth...
Here's the first thing you should know: I do not regret this decision. At all. It wasn't an easy one to make, but Mr. Redshoegirl and I firmly believe that this was the best option for us, and 99% of the time, I'm thrilled that we made it - skipping so much of the "stuff" that goes with a traditional wedding means we've been able to strip the event down and keep our focus on what is really meaningful about this day: making that lifelong commitment to each other.
However
...
That 1% of the time when I'm not thrilled
really
sucks. Even though I don't regret the decision, sometimes I still feel bummed that I'll never get to experience any of the "stuff" we've had to let go. No bridal shower, no flowers, no music, no bridesmaids, no rockin' reception, and we'll probably even end up dropping some of the things we're still trying to include (like wedding cake)...not to mention that we won't have our family members and close friends there. The Knot doesn't make it any easier - I'm a bio addict, but every once in a while I have to declare a moratorium and just stop looking for a little while, because seeing everyone's wonderful ideas for all the things we've had to cut can be depressing. I'll also admit that it really irks me when someone dramatically posts that they're going to give up and elope - because let's be honest, very few people are actually willing to give all of that stuff up!
So here is my honest advice...if this is what you want, and if you are positive that you won't regret giving up those things, go for it...but keep in mind that there are no "do overs" - you might get a vow renewal down the road, but it will never be the same as a full blown wedding. I love knowing that it will be just us and our parents on that beach, with no distractions, no timetable to keep, no stressing over whether or not the multitude of vendors are doing their jobs. Just us and our love for each other and commitment to the future. But as I said...keep that 1% in mind before you make your final decision.
Quick links!
How to make bio quick links using NVU, in eight easy steps...
At the top of your bio, write a list of all the categories you want (e.g., About Us, The Dress, Cake, etc.
- this is your
quick link menu
and will be turned into
Links
)
Go through your bio and add corresponding headers at the top of each section (e.g., The Dress -
these are your
section headers
and will be turned into
Anchors
)
Highlight the
section header
that you want to turn into a quick link, then click on the
Anchor
icon in the toolbar - rename it if you want, then click
OK
Repeat for all the section headers
Scroll back up to the top of your bio to where the
quick link menu
is located
Highlight the first item in your quick link menu (e.g., The Dress), then click on the
Link
icon in the toolbar
From the drop down menu, select the
Anchor
that you want to link to and click
OK
Repeat for the rest of your menu items
That's it! The only trick with this is that if you copy and paste sections of your bio to rearrange them, double check that the links are still correct afterwards - sometimes NVU gets confused and it will stop linking to the right place in the page.
