Ken & Molly
May 19, 2007

Our wedding day was the most amazing day of our lives. It was a beautiful, sunny, 80 degree day; perfect for an outdoor wedding.
Our ceremony was held at the Lake Park Grand Staircase, a public park area in Downtown Milwaukee that overlooks Lake Michigan. Our reception was held at
the Historic Turner Ballroom, a recently reopened ballroom space that is still very raw and unrestored, giving it a unique vintage atmosphere. With the help of family
and friends, we pulled off a celebration inspired by "Old Hollywood" with modern touches. Most of the decorations and details were designed by me and
created with the help of family. I've given as many details as possible to help out future brides. The knot and the knotties were a tremendous help to me
in our nine months of planning, I hope I can help others the same way.
Getting Ready
All photos by Heather Cook Elliot unless indicated otherwise
DH has two wedding rings (see pic on left). He couldn't choose between the two, so I told him to get both. He had intended to switch off between them
(one is a little dressier, one a little more casual) but he has only worn the one the middle so far. Mine is a custom design we made together. My wedding band
is the diamond eternity band in the middle, it slides into the engagement ring and runs underneath my center stones. The engagement band is a emerald cut center
stone flanked by two trapezoid stones with small diamonds on the sides you can't see here and in the setting basket. DH's rings are tungsten because he hates scratches.
The pic on the right is the girls' shoes that they were so proud to have settled on together as a joint decision.
I made my bridesmaids' hair pieces, jewelry (a little help from DH on those) and purses. My mom made their shawls. They looked incredible!

MMM... Mimosa Toast!
My gorgeous mother - I have never seen her look more beautiful than she did that day!
Non-Pro Pics in black borders
My SIL Karen mugging during her makeup session. My DH mowed the lawn and weeded the ceremony site
the morning of. This was a total surprise.
The Ceremony
Middle pic shows just some of Carrie's amazing handiwork.
We did a memory chair with flowers that stood empty in symbolism of all who had passed and couldn't be with us.
Why is my DH and MIL holding a Ken doll? DH and I have a longstanding joke about his name (Ken) and the Ken doll, and I've given
him one for many significant events. This one is his "wedding time Ken" that I gave him the morning of. He brought it to the ceremony
to show everyone and MIL babysat during the ceremony.
Coming down those stairs was a dramatic and long entrance.
My dad sang "One Hand, One Heart", which he also sang at my sisters' weddings and at his and my mom's wedding.
Our BM Britany sang "In My Life" by the Beatles. She did an amazing job, she also sings with the Nashville Opera. We picked the song
because we wanted to do something that recognized our amazing friends and family.

My parents created a surprise lavender toss for us. They slaved away at boxes, seals and ribbon the week before the wedding - all in secret. It was so sweet of them.

In-Between (Picture Time)
All photos by Heather Cook Elliott unless listed otherwise.
For our picture time we went into Lake Park, on our limo bus and played around on Old World Third Street.
Ken gave all of the guys matching watches as a thank-you gift, so they had to show them off.
Us with his parents at left, with my parents in the middle, and our whole party on the right and below.

Me with my sisters (both MOHs) on the left and with my best friend and MOH, knottie Weddingsrule. She married my cousin, one of our groomsmen, on June 16th,
so now she is officially family.

My shoes had my grandmother's vintage shoe clips on them.
We stopped at Lucille's for some photo-ops (It is one of our favorite bars) and the owner let us play around and bought everyone a shot.

ALL non-pro pics with black borders.

My three wonderful and gorgeous Maids of Honor.

Knottie Weddingsrule (MOH) and her FI, my cousin Craig. They were
married June 16!

We had a limo coach bus for everyone inbetween the ceremony and reception. Ken put on some Tom Petty and
we couldn't help but get up and start dancing.

Signing our marriage liscense right before the reception...

Reception
Photos by Heather Cook Elliott unless indicated otherwise.
Ken and I entered to "Black Betty" and the place went nuts. Our families and friends are definately a classic rock crowd.
How many speeches can one wedding party give? Well, let's see, there was one from each of the three maids of honor and three best men,
One by our remaining siblings (that's two more), my father, Ken's aunt (no pic) and we had to say thank you too. So....
That makes 11 speeches. Truly amazing that we didn't loose everyone in the hall! You have to appreciate it when there is that much love.

\
We gave each of the kids a goody bag that had light sticks (my cousin playing with his little brother's stick above), candy, bubbles and disposable cameras in them.
There was a note asking them to be our jr. photographers and they were everywhere with those cameras. We collected them at the end of the night and had them
developed for them - they had some interesting perspectives, but more importantly they had a blast with them.
We went to Nashville for my Bachelorette and brought back one of our favorite
line dances to the reception - boots and all!

I had a fortune bouquet toss, it split into seven smaller bouquets, and Ken's sister still managed to catch three!
Ken's cousin caught the garter - and got to dance with four girls - which he totally ate up. And the craziest thing is he asked his girlfriend
to marry him a month later and they will be married in August! Guess that is one prophecy that came true!
It is a tradition in Ken's family to take a whole-family picture of his dad's side. These are (most of) his aunts, uncles and first cousins. His dad is
one of ten kids - a very big family. Hard to believe there are actually people missing here. Love them all.
That's all folks!

Rehearsal Dinner
We had rehearsal at our ceremony site and dinner at the Milwaukee Ale House.
All pictures by friends and family.

Putting it all Together...
The colors were off white, champagne and pewter. They evolved from the choices of our bridesmaid's dresses and my dress and our desire
to have an "old hollywood" style wedding. Ken and I have been dating for over 7 years when we were engaged, so I had been collecting ideas for a long time.
We went for elegant and vintage with a modern sensibility. Sounds contradictory, but I think we pulled it off. Sticking to our color scheme helped
pull all of the elements together beautifully. I also went for a lot of pearl accents - in the girls' jewelry, menu cards, place cards, bouquets, monograms, etc.
Flowers
I did all white flowers, sticking to just a handful of varieties to keep things clean and simple. I have a thing against roses, so with the help of our
florist I chose Gardenias, Dendrobium Orchids, Ranauculus, Anemones and Lisanthius. These were put together with seeded eucalyptus and pearls
for the girls' bouquets and with feathers on mine. There were two large Dendrobium Orchid arrangements in tall 4' vases that I purchased, with
curly willow sunk into the vase itself and feathers in the arrangement. The long feasting tables had tall pilsner vases with a Dendrobium Orchid sunk in the water
and curly willow coming out the top to give height and marry the hanging chandeliers with the tables. Some tables had low bowls with floating gardenias and all of the candle/hurricane
centerpieces had dendrobium orchid blooms scattered amongst them. The ceremony also had potted plants that we
had purchased - hanging baskets in the large planters, Star Jasmine bushes and two other types of bushes. These were reused at the Reception site.
We have since replanted all of those plants in our yard - so they did triple duty. As an extra bonus the star jasmine masked the body odor on the hot and sweaty dance floor.

Tables and Centerpieces

We did a mix of feasting tables (long banquet style), rounds and squares to seat about 318 guests. The linens were alternated between a patterned
vintage look one and plain ivory with pewter sheer runners (BBJ Linens). Table decorations were either a grouping of candles in glass hurricanes or low bowls
with floating gardenias. Tea-lights were everywhere. Candles were also added on ledges, window wells, staircases, etc.The candles provided alot of the
light for the reception and really gave the hall a magical feel. My FIL added it up and there was well over 800 candles (including tea lights) at the reception.
You'll notice half of the chairs are missing in the above pics - they are at the ceremony site and were brought over between the two events
to save cost on rentals. A semi-sheer ivory fabric was draped from the arches and stage flyaways.

Invitations, Programs, Place Cards, Table Numbers, Signs, All Paper
I own my own design company, so I designed and made every piece of paper in our wedding. All of the design stemmed from our invitations.
Each item is detailed below.
Invitations
Invites were letterpressed on Crane's Letra paper, with a deboss scrollwork design and pewter colored text. Corners were hand-rounded.
There were 6 components: main invite, reception card (directions on back), accomodations card, rsvp card, rsvp envelope and parking ticket.
All items were stacked and pulled together with a vellum bellyband which was topped with a sliver thread knotted in front.
Programs
I printed the covers on an off-white cardstock and rounded the corners with a corner punch. Interior pages
were printed the same way on text stock. Bound with silver thread. We included a title page, ceremony order, wedding party, In memory,
vows, Something old, new, blue and borrowed, and a thank you. The back cover had one of my favorite wedding quotes.
Placecards
There were 5 entree options including the kids' meal, so I used different color pearls to indicate each choice. Kid's meals were marcasite
stars for fun. The placecards were printed with the numbers on cardstock, rounded with a corner punch and names were attached after
being printed on vellum. The pearls were glued on last. The wedding party placecards were on the back of our chairs b/c we were on
the stage and the caterers couldn't walk in front of us to see our selections.
Table numbers
Printed on the off-white cardstock, corners rounded with a corner punch. Holders were made of sculpting wire and pearls to work with the
scroll work design element on the signs.
Menu Cards
We put one of these at each place setting. Printed on off-white cardstock, corners rounded with a corner punch and
pearl bead glued to the top.
Signs
All printed on off-white cardstock and mounted to a pewter sparkle cardstock I picked up at Broadway Paper.
Table Tents
Our hall had so much history, we wanted to make people aware of it. The table tents shared the history of the hall with our guests and were
placed on the cocktail tables all over the hall. Printed on off-white cardstock with corners rounded by a corner punch.
Save the Dates
We wanted a photo-wheel and a vintage look. Printed on white cardstock and corners rounded with a corner punch.

Rehearsal Dinner Invites
We wanted to incorporate the feel of the brewery where it was held, which has a custom coaster for each of its brews. I had one
of my students illustrate a coaster design for us and then made the coasters attaching them to a laser printed card which had the
pertinent info beneath the coaster when it is removed.

FOR SALE
email me at molly@mthreestudio.com to purchase any of these items.
Three Dendrobium Orchid Chandeliers (all silk flowers).
Two chandeliers are smaller, one is larger. The larger one is roughly 7 feet in diameter, the smaller ones are just over 6ft. These measurements
may seem small, but they have a big impact and were more than adequate for our huge hall (which was about 60 feet across).
The smaller chandeliers have flowers hanging from the outer edge, the larger one also has a fall of flowers from the center. Flowers are strung on invisible fishing line.
The chandeliers come in parts for transport - the frame is all one piece, made of pvc (very light) and wrapped in white ribbon with eye hooks on each side for hanging.
The flowers are on wires that you zip-tie to the frame on site in a few minutes. Once they are up in the air the effect is stunning.
These chandeliers took over 200 man-hours to construct. Prices below are a true bargain rate!
All three (with extra flowers to make more strands if you like) = $550
Two smaller ones together (with extra flowers to make more strands if you like) = $350
One large one (with extra flowers to make more strands if you like) = $200
I can not ship these - they are too large. Local pick-up only. I am located in Franklin, WI.

This photo shows the large one in the foreground with one All three Chandeliers are shown here. The large one is the center
of the smaller ones shown in the background. with the two smaller ones closest and farthest away.
Aisle Runner
White actual fabric runner, 100 feet long. Not the imitation fabric or the semi transparent floral patterned kind.
Perfect for painting with your monogram, etc.
This was never put out at my ceremony, is brand new, still in the box.
It has the rope pull for properly rolling it out.

Ceremony Location - Lake Park Grand Staircase
Absolutely gorgeous location. We did the ceremony at the base of the staircase, with the girls and me entering down the stairs, which was a big drama moment that we loved. Being on the lake made it a little cooler on our 80 degree day, and it was scenic. The parks department is a bit trying to work with though. We were quoted a permit fee in 2006 when we were "penciled in" but you can't get your permit till after the first of the year, and then they raised their permit prices, so we had to spend an extra 300 bucks. The park manager worked hard with me to accomodate a rain back-up tent at the site. The site itself needed some love - my DH came the morning of and mowed the grass and weeded some of the area and swept the stairs down. He had decided the night before at rehearsal that it wasn't up to par. The annual summer planting doesn't happen until June, so most of the flowers you see in the pics we had to bring in. There was also a large tree in the center planting area that was falling over, and they didn't fix it despite my many calls a week before about it. Overall, we loved the site, and the hiccups involved with it were worth it to us. They don't get an A because of the maintenance issues and permit raise.
B-

Officiant - David Pruhs - Court Commissioner
I can't say enough about David. He was absolutely awesome. He helped us write our ceremony and he came to the rehearsal for no charge. He did an impeccable job performing our ceremony even when the sound system went haywire. And when our DOC took our marriage liscense with her to the reception site after the ceremony, he offered to come to the reception to have us sign it there without missing a beat. He wasn't even put out by it. Above and Beyond, hands down. Highly, Highly recommend!

Reception Location - Historic Turner Ballroom
We loved the vintage feel of Turner, and chose it for that and it's ability to hold our large guest list. It definately takes more work though, since you have to rent everything yourself. The Ballroom Manager is easy to work with however, and the location is more than unique. Our only real problem was that the ballroom was supposed to be cleaned for us to set up early Friday morning, and on Thursday night I discovered it hadn't been cleaned yet. In the end, all worked out. They also don't have air conditioning, so it was fairly warm until the sun went down. All in all, a unique venue that totally took our guests' breath away. Worth every effort.

Caterers - Louise's Catering
This is Turner's required caterer, but we couldn't have chosen better ourselves. The manager Gretchen is phenomenal! So professional and just top notch all the way. The food was amazing and they were willing to make anything we wanted. We are still hearing about how good the Prime Rib was. Our only issue was that the dish we specially requested did not live up the tasting on the wedding day, but it seems that only those of us who knew what it was supposed to taste like noticed. I was very dissapointed with that only because I was really looking forward to that dish. The prime rib was amazing, and though we didn't get to have any, we have been told the tiramisu also was great. The staff was top notch and attended to each guest's every need without missing a beat. The bar staff as well handled everything beautifully, especially our drunk friends. Highly recommend!

Cake Creator - Custom Creations and Alterations
My seamstress made our cake. She does it on the side, and we had always wanted something that was truthfully very simple. Plus, we didn't serve cake, we served tiramisu instead, so the cake was actually one real layer on the bottom for us to cut and two styrofoam layers on top for show. The cake was super yummy though, and beautifully done. She was great to work with and made me a sample for no charge. A+

Florist - Carrie at Petals
Carrie is awesome. There is no other way to put it. She went above and beyond to make my vision happen on my budget. I was altering and tweaking thinks right up to the last minute and she didn't miss a beat. All of the flowers were gorgeous and so much better than I expected. I think I would have done just Gardenias in my bouquet if I could do it again - but that would be my choice, and so not Carrie's fault. My only dissapointment was that the anemones didn't have dark centers, which I had requested, but I haven't asked Carrie about this so I don't know if they just weren't available or what. Highly, Highly recommend.

Photographer - Heather Cook Elliott
Heather did a magnificent job. Our pictures are gorgeous, just as good as photographers I looked at that were twice the price. She was everywhere on our day, and was up for anything. We had a very energetic wedding party and she kept up with us without any complaint. Our only dissapointment is that we don't have more than one family shot with each of our parents, and none of the immediate families or sibling groups or other more "formal" group shots we had asked for. I didn't have a list with me that day, and our ceremony ran a bit late, so I wasn't thinking of any of that until it was too late. I do think this was partly Heather's responsibility to make sure these shots happened. We also don't have any pictures of just Ken, or just me, or really any of Ken's prep time or waiting before the ceremony time. All in all though, I wouldn't trade our pictures for anything, and the missing shots aren't that big of a deal. We own all of our images and got 10 hours of coverage for the price some photogs asked for just to own the images. She also did a great job with our engagement pictures. It is not easy working with another photographer as your client, and Heather did a great job.

A-

Videographer - Anne Morningstar
Anne is one of my students, and I asked her at the last minute to tape our ceremony. She does do this for several weddings every summer, and she is very good. She did a tremendous job taping our ceremony. The sound situation was more than challenging, and she nailed it. There are shots of Ken and I during the ceremony and our vows that are absolutely priceless. We were crying watching our video when it arrived. I am so pleased I decided to have this done and can show my kids one day. She also added a beautiful credit sequence (with the names of those who were in the wedding and all of our music and reading selections) that utilized some of the receiving line footage. The whole piece was beautifully done and really captured our day as it was, not as something else. If you are interested in hiring her, send me an email and I will give you her contact info.

A

Disc Jockey - Mad Cap Milwaukee
We LOVED our DJ. He was recommended to us by one of our bridesmaids who had him for her wedding. We gave him a list of exactly what we wanted to play with very little wiggle room. (we are serious music people) He worked with us to make it a list that would be energetic. He did fill in here and there, and he kept the dance floor PACKED all night long, and stayed later when we asked him too. He kept things going, checking with us when necessary, but not bugging us. All of the fun of having every song you want without any cheesy DJ crap. Highly recommend.

A+

Musicians - Arreaux Strings - Rebecca Shaw
I think I've seen every knottie say this - but it is true - I don't remember hearing the music much. I do remember hearing the trumpet, which I had specially requested, and Rebecca built a trio around that for me. The only problem we had was that they didn't switch from the prelude to the girl's music when they should have - but I honestly don't know if they weren't being cued by the DOC or if they just didn't do it. My two vocalists said they were wonderful to work with and did a great job. They were on time, did rehearsal with the vocalists and were super low maintenance, in fact I never even talked to them that day.

A

Transportation - Crystal Limosine
We struck a deal with them for my DH's bachelor party and the wedding. The owner Samir, was our driver and he was super calm and collected (despite us running late) and treated us wonderfully. The bus was clean, spacious and very nice. A little ridiculous on all of the "features" (a video screen fireplace on an 80 degree day) but my DH really wanted it that way. It was great to party with our friends before the reception. All in all, great service and vehicle.

Invitations and all Paper Items - mthree Studio
This is my own company. I designed the invites and all of the other items. I still love every piece of stationary to bits, so

I guess I did a good job. ;0) Please check out my website if you are interested in seeing more, or have needs for your wedding.

No job is too small to be a custom and unique one.

Rental Company - Karls Even Rental
Where to start? First, we got a great deal on our rentals - I negotiated heavily with them because we needed so much, and they beat everyone else's prices and then some. However, the tables and chairs were supposed to be delivered on Friday between 8and noon. They didn't come until after 1:30, and only after many, many upset phone calls from me. The driver and workers were beligerent with my DH and were throwing chairs off the truck breaking them. My DH and his friends did most of the unloading because we were so far behind schedule. We had to call and get replacements on the broken and damaged items they sent us. All in all, this fiasco made us late for our rehearsal and really was very stressfull. They did deliver the chairs to the ceremony site on time the next day, but honestly, if I hadn't gotten so upset with them the day before I don't know that it would have been that way. On friday, when I was talking to our account manager and her manager, they assured me they would be talking to the sales manager about our situation and would be doing somehting for us. When I called a week and a half later to discuss the situation, she acted like she didn't know what I was talking about. To get the issue behind us, we agreed to a 15% discount as compensation. It isn't enough, but at least it is over. I can't recommend them in good faith. Canopies is quite a bit more, but apparently worth it. Our catering manager told me on Friday "This is why we never deal with Karls". Not very confidence building.

D-

Jeweler - Art Metals Studio
Christopher Sklba worked with us to design our rings. He had designed my graduation ring, and it was DH's intention from the beginning that we design my ring together. The process was more time consuming than I would have liked, but in the end I have a totally custom ring that I truly love and is like nothing else. Their service is top notch and the product is too. A week and a half before the wedding they helped me get together custom necklaces for our moms with no complaints. Highly Recommend.

A

Tuxedos - Men's Wearhouse

We chose Men's Wearhouse because they fit the shirts and jackets on more than just the neck measurement. Everyone had all of their pieces, they fit well and the price was good. DH also got his RD suit there. They did a great job with service, fitting and tailoring, even taking up my dad's pants the day before the wedding. They also custom ordered all of the men's ties and pocket squares for us. No complaints.

A

My Dress - Melissa Sweet "Lia" - Zita's Bridal

My dress was a Melissa Sweet "Lia" ordered thru Zita's Bridal.
Zitas gave me great service when I was shopping and once I had decided they price matched a shop in Indiana. My only complaint is that when I came into pick up my dress (I made an appointment 2 weeks ahead of time) they tried to stick us in a storage closet to try it on - claiming they were overbooked and basically ignored me. I would say once they have your money they aren't at all interested in you. I didn't do my alterations there even though they were far more convienient, b/c they were so overpriced in my opinion and I didn't appreciate the treatment I got once my dress was in.

C+

Bridesmaid Dresses - Bloomingdales - Skokie,IL
The dresses were BCBG and off the rack. I wanted something with texture to contrast my all silk gown and I didn't want traditional bridesmaid's gowns. The girls at the dress department searched the whole country for me to get the right sizes and got us the best discounts on the dresses. In the end the originally $400 dresses cost us about $150 each. Great service, quick and so nice to work with. All of the dresses were perfect, I'm still totally in love with them.

A+

Hair Stylist - Holly & Neroli Brookfield
Holly travelled to the downtown location to do my hair the day of, and she was great. She was there early and so calm. When I started to freak out that things didn't look right, she was great at keeping me sane and fixing it right away. I was done on time, and perfectly. Holly is my regular stylist, and I'm always pleased with her work. The staff at Neroli Downtown did a great job on the rest of my girls as well, and the event booker worked with us to get the best pricing for everyone. My only issue was that the desk girls had our charges wrong and kept trying to insist it was $50 more than it was. It took ALOT of discussion to get it right. I wouldn't mention it but the exact same thing happened at my MOH's wedding one month later. I would say the group coordinator needs to go over the schedule with the desk ahead of time.

A

Makeup Artist - Julie On Location
Julie was wonderful. My first trial didn't go so well, I really didn't like it. So she fit me in for a second one for free and it was great. She did a PHENOMENAL job on everyone the day of. My mother has never looked more gorgeous. We got super sweaty at the reception, but things pretty much stayed looking great. She even came to the ceremony to touch us up afterwards before pics. I think she can be a little hard to warm up to, but once you know her, she is so sweet and wonderful. She gave me a shade of lipstick I'm still wearing and I have never been able to find lipstick I like on me, ever.

A+

Linens - BBJ Linens
BBJ was great. Our linens were fabulous. Some of our order didn't show up on the delivery date, but they ran what they had in the shop down to the reception hall on Thursday and had the rest fed-exed in on Friday early in the morning. Great service. The rounds that they said would fit the long banquet tables did not, however the extra linens we had because of the shipment mix-up took care of that problem so it all worked out. I fell fairly confident that if I had called that day to say it was a problem, they would have taken care of it. Also, the chair ties/table runners aren't long enough to go longways on a banquet table, despite what they said, but we made it work. They also did the linens for my MOH's wedding a month later and all was perfect.

A

Alterations- Custom Creations and Alterations
This is who I used for alterations on my gown, my mom and my sister's dresses. She did a great job, was very detailed and thourough. I had a lot of alterations and a bustle for $140. She also gave us sticky tape and extra bra cups for free. And those bra cups came in handy when I put the dress on the day of and realized I had lost a little weight. Very, very good and well worth the trip to Racine. I have since taken other work to her and am equally pleased.
